Google reports Fourth Quarter results

Google has reported fourth quarter revenue of $1.9 billion, up 86 per cent compared with the same period in 2004. Net income grew 82 per cent to $372 million.


Oxford libraries 'may lose up to 200 jobs'

Oxford University is planning to reduce staffing costs in its libraries by up to £2m, which could result in the loss of up to 200 jobs. The curators of Oxford University libraries have proposed that over a five-year period, staffing costs be reduced by up to £2m.


HighBeam Introduces Free Full-Text Journal Articles

With unlimited access to 35-plus million full-text articles available to subscribers for $19.95 a month or $99.95 a year, HighBeam Research  is already a considerable bargain, particularly when compared with traditional services charging pay-per-view on top of subscription fees. Now, HighBeam has made 1.5 million articles from its library available to anyone at no charge; the service does not even require registration information.

E-mail firms to charge for first-class deliveries

AOL and Yahoo!, two of the world’s biggest e-mail providers, are to charge companies to ensure that their e-mails reach consumers — even if spam filters are turned on.

The idea is almost identical to the Royal Mail’s system of guaranteed delivery in which companies such as banks pay a fee amounting to a fraction of a penny to send an e-mail that is certain to arrive promptly.


Swiss scientists sign up to open access

Swiss scientific organisations have agreed to allow open access to their research information for all interested parties, free of charge.


Internet growth lifts Yell Group
BBC News, February 7

Directory publishing group Yell has reported rising revenues and profits, helped by strong growth in the US and at its Yell.com website. The company said revenue for the nine months to 31 December rose 23.7% to £1.1bn ($1.95bn), while pre-tax profits were up to £220m from £173m


Autonomy ignores boom and bust on way to bright future

ANNUAL results from Autonomy yesterday suggest that the company is beginning to hit its stride. Results for the three months to December 31, issued yesterday alongside the annual figures, showed the company to be profitable for the the 24th consecutive quarter.


Shady tactics in battle for internet hits

With 600 million searches undertaken each month in Britain alone, companies will pursue any method, including some deemed underhand, to gain maximum visibility on the pages operated by the likes of Google, Yahoo and Microsoft. Google, the search engine giant, signalled the first round of the battle after blacklisting the German site of BMW and Ricoh, the Japanese photocopier and office equipment manufacturer.


Yahoo in second Chinese blogger row

Yahoo! was today accused of providing evidence to the Chinese authorities that led to a dissident blogger being sent to prison for eight years, the second such case involving the American internet company in the past year.


Thomson Reports Strong Fourth-Quarter and Full-Year 2005 Results

For the full year, revenues increased 8%, to $8.70 billion, driven by 12% growth in electronic products, software and services. Operating profit increased 10%, and operating profit margin increased to 16.8%.

Yell snaps up Spanish rival TPI
BBC News, February 28

Directory publishing group Yell has agreed to buy a majority stake in Spanish phone directory firm Telefonica Publicidad e Informacion (TPI). Yell - which operates the Yellow Pages in the UK - also launched a bid for the whole of the firm, valuing it at 3.3bn euros (£2.3bn; $4.1bn).
