Google brought to book over Peter Pan
Times Online, November 4

Google, which has resumed scanning in books to its online library, found itself accused of damaging the fundraising efforts of a London children's hospital which has relied for more than 75 years on royalties from J M Barrie's Peter Pan.


Microsoft to put British Library online
Times Online, November 4

Microsoft has agreed to make 25,000 pages from the British Library's archive available online. They will make an initial investment of $2.5 million in the scheme, as the first part of a long-term project that will begin with 10,000 books being scanned and made accessible over the net.


ITV takes prime spot in race for Friends Reunited
Times Online, November 4

ITV has emerged as the surprise front-runner to acquire Friends Reunited, the website dedicated to putting school friends back in touch. Friends Reunited was put up for auction in the summer, after the company concluded that it was not possible to grow further without becoming part of a larger group.


Online sales rise by 81 per cent
vnunet.com, November 9

The value of internet sales in the UK rose by 81 per cent to £71.1bn in 2004, up from £39.3bn a year earlier, according to the Office of National Statistics.


Springer buys Current Medicine Group
EContent, November 11

Springer Science+Business Media has bought Current Medicine Group, which publishes health care information. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. CMG has four operating groups: Current Medicine Group, which publishes books and pamphlets for primary care professionals and hospitals; Science Press Internet Services, which creates and manages Web sites and provides educational content through its MedWire portal; Current Medicine, an image library; and Current Science, which publishes medical review journals. Over the past twelve months CMG realised sales of around $20.5M.


Debating Future Of UK’s Higher Education Information Infrastructure
Managing Information, November 13

Leading Higher Education representatives provide their responses to the recent report by CHEMS Consulting Optimising storage and access in UK research libraries. The Report, commissioned earlier this year by the Consortium of Research Libraries (CURL) and the British Library, will be launched at the British Library Conference Centre on 13 December.


Google makes $3 million donation to the World Digital Library project
InfoWorld, November 23

With its $3 million donation, Google has become the first private-sector contributor to the Library of Congress' World Digital Library (WDL) project, the two organizations have announced.. The Library of Congress will continue to seek contributions from other private-sector companies for the project.
