Changes
to the Small Firms Loan Guarantee

Sweeping changes to the Small Firms Loan Guarantee (SFLG) are to be introduced later
this year. Competitiveness Minister Barry Gardiner said: "From 1 December 2005 we
will be implementing the recommendations from the Graham Review. This will further enable
us to build on the economic stability afforded to us by small and medium-sized enterprises
and help them overcome the obstacles they face when raising debt finance.

by joining forces with Sun Microsystems to ramp up distribution of a rival product to
Microsofts Office software.

Risk of 'bird flu' transmitting to humans very low

Head of Immunisation for England, Dr David Salisbury, has reassured the public that the
risk of 'bird flu' being transmitted to humans is very low and that the Department of
Health is taking all the right steps to protect the public.
British Library appoints Ruth Jones to develop National Digital Library

British Library creates new role for former Extenza boss to spearhead the development
of the National Digital Library. The National Digital Library is already
in a pilot stage with 23 journal publishers contributing electronic content to the
archive.
Easynet
rings up takeover bid as BSkyB looks to broadband sector
Scotsman, October 17
In a short statement released to the stock exchange today, Easynet said: "The
board can confirm that it has received an approach that may or may not lead to a formal
offer being made for the company."
Analysts have put a value of up to £150 million on Easynet, which has its own
equipment in 250 local BT exchanges, giving it direct access to 5.8 million homes and
850,000 businesses in the UK.
JISC announces
winning publishers under its open access programme
JISC announcement, October 18
JISC today announced the winners of funding under the third round of its Open Access
programme under which publishers are awarded seed money to explore open access models of
publishing. Following the success of the first two years of the programme, the decision
has been made to award three publishers funds to support open access delivery for their
journals.
Google could face
Gmail defeat across Europe

The internet search company announced that it had dropped the "Gmail" name in
the UK, following a long-running dispute with London-based Independent II Research (IIIR),
a tiny British financial research team, which claims to hold the right to use the
trademark.

Outlines UK plans for responding to an influenza pandemic, based on the framework
recommended by the World Health Organization for national pandemic plans.
Publishers sue over Google internet library
Times Online, October 20
The Association of American Publishers is seeking an injunction to stop work on the
Google Print Library Project, which involves indexing millions of copyrighted books from
three major American university libraries and making them available on the internet.
High street retailer WHSmith says the successful outsourcing of its IT
systems has helped to achieve £18m in cost savings in its latest financial year. The
company saved £3m more than it had hoped for this year.

to buy French bookshops

Bertelsmann, the German media company that operates the
worlds largest set of book clubs, agreed on Friday to buy the French bookshop chain
Alsatia Group to expand its book business in the country.
