Bertelsmann, the world's fourth largest media group, has posted a 6%
increase in first quarter profits to £23m, a figure kept down by the cost of

acquires Macromedia in all-stock transaction

Adobe Systems has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Macromedia in an
all-stock transaction valued at approximately $3.4 billion. The combination of Adobe and
Macromedia will provide customers a more powerful set of solutions for creating, managing
and delivering compelling content and experiences across multiple operating systems,
devices and media.

widens open access trial

The drive to make scientific, medical and academic research more freely available on
the internet got a shot in the arm yesterday as Oxford University Press widened its trial
of open access publishing.
Separately, the Joint Information Systems Committee, JISC, an advisory body, announced
a deal with the British and Irish Legal Information Institute to produce Open Law, an
online repository of about 200 of the most cited judgements in core areas of the law
syllabus.
Mozilla expands in Europe

affiliate in Europe as world-wide Firefox downloads surpass 50 million. Established in
January 2004 by long-time Mozilla contributors from several European countries, Mozilla

Mozilla releases Firefox security update

for Firefox that fixes critical vulnerabilities reported earlier in the open-source
browser.
The London Development Agency, the Mayor of London's
agency for business and jobs, has awarded the British Library £1 million to transform its

Sons, Inc. announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire Sybex Inc., a
publisher of computer books and software based in Alameda, California. The terms of the
purchase, which is scheduled to close by the end of the month, were not disclosed.
Sybex has been a leading publisher for the global Information Technology
professional community for nearly 30 years. Known for high quality publications that are
translated into more than 20 languages, Sybex publishes about 100 new titles a year and
has a backlist of approximately 450 titles in the graphics, digital photography, operating

PubMed Central.

UK telephone directory publisher Yell is buying US peer TransWestern for £829m

International medical
journals amplify call for registration of drug trials

Editors of 11 international medical journals have repeated their call to
register clinical drug trials in a public registry. In a joint editorial, the members of
the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), said they will consider
publishing results of clinical trials that begin enrolment on or after July 1, 2005, only
if the trial has been entered in a registry that is electronically searchable and publicly
accessible at no charge before the first patient is enrolled.
