Bertelsmann profits held back by music deal
Media Guardian, May 3

Bertelsmann, the world's fourth largest media group, has posted a 6% increase in first quarter profits to £23m, a figure kept down by the cost of restructuring its record label joint venture, Sony BMG.


Oxford Journals announces Oxford Open

Oxford Journals, a division of Oxford University Press (OUP), has announced its latest Open Access (OA) project, Oxford Open. Commencing July 2005. it will offer an optional author-pays model to authors of accepted papers in a range of Oxford Journals titles.


Adobe acquires Macromedia in all-stock transaction

Adobe Systems has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Macromedia in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $3.4 billion. The combination of Adobe and Macromedia will provide customers a more powerful set of solutions for creating, managing and delivering compelling content and experiences across multiple operating systems, devices and media.


OUP widens open access trial
Guardian unlimited, May 6

The drive to make scientific, medical and academic research more freely available on the internet got a shot in the arm yesterday as Oxford University Press widened its trial of open access publishing.

Separately, the Joint Information Systems Committee, JISC, an advisory body, announced a deal with the British and Irish Legal Information Institute to produce Open Law, an online repository of about 200 of the most cited judgements in core areas of the law syllabus.


Mozilla expands in Europe

Mozilla announce expansion of  their non-profit international affiliate in Europe as world-wide Firefox downloads surpass 50 million. Established in January 2004 by long-time Mozilla contributors from several European countries, Mozilla Europe aims to promote, develop and contribute to the Mozilla open source software project. Mozilla Europe is based in Paris, France.


Context becomes Justis

Context Limited has become Justis Publishing Limited. This change is as a result of customer feedback about the company name and their flagship service, Justis.com.  Justis Publishing Ltd is an independent publisher of electronic legal information and provider of publishing software and services.


Thomson Announces Firm360 for Legal Business Development
Information Today, May 9

The legal market group within The Thomson Corp. has announced a new service designed to give law firms key market and competitive intelligence to aid their business development efforts. Firm360 (http://www.firm360.com) is a Web-based application that combines customisable content aggregated from across Thomson (including Thomson Financial, Thomson Gale, NewsRoom from Dialog, and Westlaw) with tools to streamline client development tasks.


Interoute launches extranet for print, publishing sector
Digital Media Europe, May 9

European voice and data network operator Interoute has launched the Interoute Media Xchange (IMX), an extranet designed for the print and publishing sector to streamline the supply of digital information.


Mozilla releases Firefox security update
SC Magazine

The Mozilla Foundation has released a security update for Firefox that fixes critical vulnerabilities reported earlier in the open-source browser.


British Library awarded £1m to support small businesses

The London Development Agency, the Mayor of London's agency for business and jobs, has awarded the British Library £1 million to transform its Business & Intellectual Property Centre from a successful pilot project to a permanent resource.

Wiley to acquire Sybex
Wiley Press Release, 11 May

John Wiley & Sons, Inc. announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire Sybex Inc., a publisher of computer books and software based in Alameda, California. The terms of the purchase, which is scheduled to close by the end of the month, were not disclosed.

Sybex has been a leading publisher for the global Information Technology professional community for nearly 30 years. Known for high quality publications that are translated into more than 20 languages, Sybex publishes about 100 new titles a year and has a backlist of approximately 450 titles in the graphics, digital photography, operating systems, programming, and gaming categories


Train operators to fit WiFi at stations

Train operators are to install wireless hotspots in 85 stations across south-west England so travellers can access the internet while waiting for their trains.

Guinness World Records, which features some of the globe’s strangest achievers, could be about to change hands for more than £40m.


Free UK online health portal planned

The Wellcome Trust and the US National Library of Medicine are intending to set up a UK-based version of the free open-access online health research directory PubMed Central.

Unlike conventional pay-for-access print and online journals, PubMed Central is freely available, with funding coming from researchers paying to have their papers included.


Yell dials up deal to buy US peer
BBC News, 17 May

UK telephone directory publisher Yell is buying US peer TransWestern for £829m ($1.58bn) on the back of a surge in full-year profits. The deal means Yell's US operation, Yellow Book, will be the fifth-largest directory publisher in the US.


United Business Media boss sells a third of his stake

Charles Gregson chops more than a third of his holding to raise just shy of £580,000. He sold 120,000 shares.


Speechmark Publishing to Move Distribution to NBN International

MSN Unveils Plans for Local Maps, Search, Ads
ClickZ Network, 24 May

Microsoft's MSN has laid out plans for competing with Google and Yahoo! in the local space, demonstrating a satellite mapping application and describing a local search service. Both will debut in beta this summer with locally targeted ads from partner Yahoo! Search Marketing.


International medical journals amplify call for registration of drug trials
Public Health News, 24 May

Editors of 11 international medical journals have repeated their call to register clinical drug trials in a public registry. In a joint editorial, the members of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), said they will consider publishing results of clinical trials that begin enrolment on or after July 1, 2005, only if the trial has been entered in a registry that is electronically searchable and publicly accessible at no charge before the first patient is enrolled.

Reed Elsevier makes an offer to acquire MediMedia

Reed Elsevier announced that it has made an offer, subject to certain conditions, to Santemedia Group Holding ("Santemedia") to acquire MediMedia's Medical Academic Publishing activities in France, Spain, Italy, Mexico and the UK.

Reed Elsevier announced that it had made a binding offer to acquire MediMedia's European and US Netter professional medical publishing businesses (MediMedia MAP) for $270 million in cash, subject to the necessary regulatory clearances.


Reed buys medical publishing businesses
International Herald Tribune, 27 May

Reed Elsevier has acquired a French medical publishing company, MediMedia, for around EUR270 million. The MediMedia businesses had revenues of EUR101 million last year. The units publish books and journals through the Masson, Netter and Doyma imprints.
