European Online
Advertising Expected to Top 1.4 billion Euros in 2005
Forrester Research, 25 NovemberThe European online display
advertising market -- which Forrester defines as banner ads, sponsorships, slotting fees,
interstitials, and rich media -- is set to grow at a 12 percent CAGR during the next five
years, starting with 12.5 percent growth to around 793 million Euros in 2003, according to
new research released by Forrester Research at its Consumer Forum, Europe in London. By
2008, Forrester forecasts that the European display ad market alone will nearly double to
almost 1.4 billion Euros.
New MD plans to make FIZ Karlsruhe the number 1 in Europe

VeriSign complete sale of Network
Solutions
Verisign Press Release, 25 November
Mountain View-based Internet
security and payment-system company VeriSign Inc. completed the sale of its Network
Solutions Inc. (NSI) domain name registrar business to Pivotal Private Equity, a division
of Phoenix-based Pivotal Group Inc., for $100 million. VeriSign, which announced its
intention to sell the unprofitable NSI unit in mid-October, will retain a 15 percent
equity stake in NSI. NSI will remain at its present location in Herndon, Va.

Teams Up with the British Library for Dramatic Category Expansion of Rare and Antiquarian

Amazon.co.uk, the UK's leading online retailer has today announced a unique alliance
with the British Library. The British Library has opened up its extensive bibliographic
catalogues for the first time, so that rare, antiquarian and pre-ISBN books can be made
available to buy online.
Plymbridge
Distributors has new owners
NBN International, November 21
Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Inc. of Lanham, Maryland announced
that it has purchased the assets of Plymbridge Distributors, Ltd. Rowman & Littlefield
was one of Plymbridge's 120 distribution clients before Plymbridge went into
administration in October.
Waterstone's
and Amazon.co.uk Extend Strategic Alliance

Amazon.co.uk provides Waterstone's with an e-commerce solution of technology services,
site content, product selection and customer service for the cobranded "Waterstone's
working with Amazon.co.uk" website. Amazon.co.uk acts as the seller of record,

forgets to renew hotmail.co.uk domain

Microsoft has been busy covering up an almighty
cock-up after forgetting to renew its hotmail.co.uk domain name
UK stiffens copyright laws
UK copyright law has been toughened up with the implementation of the Copyright and
Related Rights Regulations 2003.
The move brings UK copyright law into line with the EU Copyright Directive which primarily
aims to protect software, film and music producers. However, it also affects producers of
literary works, such as journalists, by removing some of the previous exceptions to
copyright infringement such as using material for research purposes, either for personal
or commercial purposes.

Microsoft
Establishes Anti-Virus Reward Program

Microsoft has announced an old-fashioned criminal-justice tactic to help solve a
modern-day problem -- a monetary reward.Initially funded by Microsoft with US$5 million,
the Anti-Virus Reward Program will help the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United
States Secret Service, in co-ordination with Interpol, to identify and arrest those who
commit crimes by illegally unleashing malicious viruses and worms on the Internet.
The NHS will shave £330m from its software licensing costs following the signing of a
nine-year deal with Microsoft, according to the National Programme for NHS IT (NPfIT). The
software giant also committed to £40m development of health-specific interface
Will U.S. Sanctions Have
Chilling Effect on Scholarly Publishing?

On 30 September, the U.S. Treasury Department
(Washington, D.C.) informed the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
that it must continue to limit members' rights in four countries embargoed by the United
States: Cuba, Iran, Libya, and Sudan.
