Blair invites more top-performing hospitals to apply for foundation status

Prime Minister will invites 38 extra top-performing hospitals to apply for foundation status. Now all 63 trusts which have been awarded the top grade of three stars by the independent health regulator could be included in the scheme.


The Public Library of Science has launched an awareness campaign
PLoS website

The campaign  includes a 30-second TV ad.which emphasises the PLoS message that open access to knowledge leads to accelerated progress. "Unlimited access to scientific research will speed discoveries and medical advances."

MarketWatch.com to Acquire Pinnacor

MarketWatch.com has announced it will acquire Pinnacor, formerly known as ScreamingMedia, in a deal worth approximately $103.2 million. MarketWatch.com said the deal would expand its presence as a provider of premium-branded news, tools, and charting capabilities.

Amazon sales surge to a magical £688m

Amazon, the internet’s biggest retailer, has seen a 37 per cent jump in sales over the last three months, managing at the same time to more than halve its losses in the April-June period.

Microsoft Reports Fourth Quarter Earnings
Microsoft, July 17

Microsoft Corp. announced revenue of $8.07 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2003, an 11 percent increase over revenue of $7.25 billion for the same period in the prior year. Operating income for the fourth quarter came in at $2.19 billion, which included charges of $796 million primarily related to the settlement of the AOL Time Warner lawsuit. The company also announced revenue of $32.19 billion for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2003, a 13 percent increase over the $28.37 billion reported last year. Operating income was $13.22 billion, compared to $11.91 billion in the prior fiscal year.


American Medical Association - Doctor's use of the Internet is rising

80 percent of American Internet users searching for health topics online

The Pew Internet & American Life Project finds that one in five Internet users has looked for mental health information, one in four has looked for health insurance information, and one in three has looked for drug information online. In all, 80% of Internet users have looked for at least one of 16 health topics.

European Union brings in new legislation about Value Added Tax.
July 1

On July 1st, 2003, the European Union brought in new legislation about Value Added Tax. European Consumers, and suppliers of online services will be hit by the new VAT ruling.

According to this law, when an EU consumer makes any digital purchases from businesses outside the EU, VAT must now be included in the price.

A protest site “Brussels Tea Party" has 2 free reports explaining how the system works.  One is for EU consumers to explain how the new directive affects their online purchases. The second is for online businesses owners.
