Elsevier to create Life Sciences Division that includes MDL

Elsevier has announced the creation of a new division to focus on the needs of customers in the life sciences. US-based online retailer  Amazon.com's largest new product release ever, with more than 500,000 copies ordered in just four months on the company s website. Amazon.co.uk, has received more than a quarter of a million pre-orders for the book.


U.S. Book Production Tops 150,000 in 2002

U.S. book title output increased 5.86 % to 150,000 new titles and editions in 2002, while new titles from the largest trade publishers declined 5.02%.  University presses increased their title output by 10.21% in 2002, reversing a decline of 4.04% in 2001


Germany's  competition regulator may halt book publisher deal

Germany's competition regulator has declined to approve media giant Bertelsmann AG's buy of Axel Springer Verlag AG's book publishers because it would dominate the paperback market.


The Thomson Corporation Intends to Sell Its Healthcare Publications

Cinven and Candover plan merger for BertelsmannSpringer

Cinven and Candover, the UK private equity groups, plan to create a specialist publishing powerhouse after agreeing to pay Euro 1.05bn ($1.2bn) for BertelsmannSpringer, the science and trade publishing arm of Germany's Bertelsmann group. It will be combind with Kluwer Academic Publishers to form the  second largest STM publisher in the world. The combined business will  be renamed as Springer.


Wolters Q1 benchmark net profit almost halved

Dutch publisher Wolters Kluwer said its first-quarter ordinary net profit before amortisation almost halved to 39 million euros, and it would have to cut its full-year outlook.


Apple Computer Inc. launch new online music store

Apple announced that more than 2 million songs had been bought and downloaded from its iTunes Music Store in the first 16 days  after it was launched.


Wolters Kluwer and IBM in e-learning project

Dutch publisher Wolters Kluwer and IBM will jointly provide e-learning solutions to schools in Britain and the Netherlands.


The Thomson Corporation Completes Offer For Elite Information Group

New copyright legislation

The UK has declared war on copyright and trademark thieves by introducing new legislation to help enforcement agencies take effective action against infringers. The cost to UK industry of fake goods was estimated to be £8.5bn in 1991, with a further loss of £1.5bn in Value Added Tax. Amazon patent bid targets used goods
