Reed Elsevier Annual Report 2002

The Science & Medical business, now branded Elsevier, has had another very successful year. Strong subscription renewals, growing online sales and a successful medical book publishing programme have delivered revenue growth ahead of the market. The successful integration of the Harcourt STM business and tight cost control has delivered double digit underlying profit growth. Revenue increased from £1,024 million to £1,295 million.

AOL Time Warner scraps free-to-view

AOL Time Warner has started to charge for online access to many of its flagship magazines. Previously the content had been free to view for all comers; now only subscribers to the journals and AOL members will have access.

Bertelsmann, the German media group, has cut the number of potential buyers of BertelsmannSpringer, its professional publishing division, from 14 to six. It hopes to raise about 1bn euros ($1.1bn)
