Thomson report 2002 results

Thomson Corporation revenues grew 7% to $7.8 billion in 2002. Revenue for the fourth quarter was $2.2 billion, a 3% increase over the fourth quarter of 2001.

Alta Vista is sold for £88 million

Alta Vista has been sold by CMGI, the US venture capital group to Overture Services for $140 million in cash and shares.


UNICEF health workers to immunise more than 4 million Iraqi children against polio
NJ.com, 17th February

Despite the threat of a U.S.-led war, 14,000 health workers will spread out across Iraq to immunise more than four million children against polio, the U.N. Children's Fund said. One child in eight dies before the age of 5 in Iraq -- one of the worst rates in the world -- while a third are malnourished and a quarter have no access to safe drinking water.


Record funds for NHS training

A record £3.4bn investment in the NHS workforce will provide more than 8,000 extra training places for nurses, midwives, therapists and healthcare scientists.

Reed Elsevier to publish full year figures

Bowkers buys PubEasy to enhance book trade info services

US book information company, Bowker, has acquired the PubEasy Online book ordering system from Vista International.


CIMA Publishing acquired by Elsevier
CIMA press release 7th February

Elsevier has completed the acquisition of the publishing assets, known as CIMA Publishing, of The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). CIMA Publishing will be integrated into Elsevier's Business Books Division and will form the basis of a long-term publishing partnership with CIMA.


Bertelsmann has received 14 takeover offers for its publishing division

The company is drawing up a shortlist of potential buyers for Bertelsmann-Springer, which comprises of 70 science and business publishing companies in 18 countries.

SwetsBlackwell drops Rowecom deal

SwetsBlackwell has withdrawn its interest to acquire the struggling subscription services vendor RoweCom.

PRS note: Rowecom was acquired by Divine Information Services in November 2001 in a stock for stock exchange which valued Rowecom at $18.7 million at the time.
